I received a recorded phone call from the Village of Grayslake last night informing citizens that they, along with most towns in Lake County were running low on salt due to the unusually frequency of snow and ice this season. They were only going to salt main streets.
We got about 3-4 more inches of accumulation over the late afternoon and night. Under Jason's verbal tutelage I figured out how to start the snow blower yesterday, so I got up early and used it this morning. I almost made it to the end of the driveway before the gas ran out. Perhaps I need a new lesson on how to mix the gas and oil etc... When I turned around to go back in the garage there was already a layer of white powder on the driveway that I just cleared.
Luckily schools are closed and I don't have to leave the house today.
I have been longing to move from this area because of the winters. Here are my reasons (in no particular order):
- I don't like being cold. I detest the below freezing temps.
- I get very sluggish in winter.
- The multiple gray days get me down.
- I feel imprisoned in the house sometimes.
- I miss being able to just step outside and play or take a walk with the kids.
- I get sick a lot in winter.
- I am terrified of driving in inclement weather. I had an accident once going less than 15 mph going around a curve in freezing rain. I am just sure something is going to happen and I get so tense and drive like a little old lady (or man).
- And luckily up until this week I haven't had to take care of snow removal, but with Jason gone I have and I have a terrible back. I have had years of pain since high school, so I try not to do to many strenuous activities. I have been relatively pain-free, or at least at a low pain level recently and have gotten spoiled.
But today I'll try to have a good attitude knowing I don't have to drive in this and just try to enjoy watching the snow, even though it is still gray outside.
I hope to take the kids out for a little bit. Something I don't do, but think I probably should. Then we can stay in and read book, play games, do puzzles... Just have some time together.

I have friends who left Chicago for some of the reasons you listed. And you know what? They detest Arizona. They are far from friends and family and realize putting up with the weather is only a small price to pay when it comes to being happy. Just remember, the grass is always greener on the other side.
And you know what one of my favorite things is about playing in the snow? Coming inside for a warm cup of hot chocolate! What kid doesn't like that?!?
Hope you're all tucked in safe and warm today. I'm not a winter person either. I grew up in a very wintery part of Oregon with lots and lots of snow. My husband would love to go back and that's fine with me ~ as long as I'm tucked in somewhere with a roaring fireplace and lots of yarn!
